NEW YORK STOCK MARKET. Prices Were Firm, In Spite ot Enor mous Liquidation. NEW YORK. March 20. Today's etoek mar ket made a remakrab.e demonstration of Strength in the prices of securities and of ab eoprtlve power in the face of enormous llauida tkn of profits. Sharp reactions from-the bast prices r-ere made In many stocks, and others -which have been recent favorltea among spec ulators for a rla were heavy on realizing profits throughout the day, but the general level of prlcwi was decidedly higher on tho day, and a very heavy aggregate of stocks was marketed. Dealings were moreor lew con gested In the leaders of stock exchange move ments, but there was a Aery broad market for the usually dormant stocks, seme of which nave not made their appearance In the records of tranraetions for many weeks ast. London was an eager buyer in this market, and, whila there were sules from that source to iafee profits, recent advances have been con siderable. Th disposition of the foreigners seemed to bo lo reln'est their profits in other stocks. They were tre nailers of Norfolk &. Wertern and of Baltimore A. Ohio, but the pur chases on London acocur.t far outbalanced the ea!e. It was estlmsted that London bought folly 00,000 shares on balance, principally among the low-priced common stocks -with pre ferred stocks ahead of them. The commission lwttsee had large fetdera 9 buy, trnlcn bad FINANCIAL NEWS accumulated over Sunday,, and the profession als took advantage of this demand to. market their holdings.. Tfils, coupled with the weak ness of local traction stock. "Sugar and Peo ple's Gas. turned prices back before the end of the first hour, but the buying continued In un abated volume, and carried the market up ward again. Later In the day, when the buy ing orders had been executed and realizing developed In the trunk line, the markel went off again. The final rally did not bring, prices back to the best but It made the closing firm. Baltimore & Ohio common rose an ex treme O71, and at one time crossed the pre ferred. There was very heavy realising In the other trunk lines under cover of the rise in Baltimore & Ohio. Special strength and activ ity was shown by" a number of the low-priced Soutnern and Southwesterne, the Pacifies, some of the coalers, txih anthracite and bituminous. The news of the day did not receive much at tention, the movement apparently being based on confidence In the general outlook for busi ness and values and In future ease in the money market. All departments of the local money market were appreciably easier today. in spite of the largely increased speculative activity and the resulting demand for funds. In spite of the large buying of stocks for Lon don account, eterllng exchange advanced a fraction, apparently in response to the har dening of money rates Jn London. A marked falling off was reported in the quantity of cot ton bills offered In the exchange market. The" bond market continued broad and active, and higher prices were made for mot of the bonds traded In. Total sales, $4,810,000. In Government bonds. The corn market early assumed a commanding air on the floor of the exchange, and held it by virtue of Ita strength and activity, from which the other its were glad to borrow. Wet weather In the West and small stocks were the only available reasons to account for the advance from a statistical standpoint. The buying by a coterie of bulls, who gave no reasons, was an Influence of im portance. May opened" a shade over Saturdaj , at 37?437T6c, and In the course of an hour had reached 3Sc The bulge met witn neavy proflt-taking, but the price was holding fairly well until Western reports showed May re ceipts aggregating 1.1&2.O0O bushels. ,An ex planation of this deluge of corn was that It was being rushed In to take advantage of the low rates to 'the Missouri River, which expire April 10. May eased off to 3Sc, and closed strong, V&feo over Saturday's close. The strength of com was sufficient to pull the wheat market away from the bearish clutch of the big Increases afloat and In export ship ments, but the downward tendency of the mar ket took the fullest advantage of the reaction In corn, and clewed weak. Cables were firm, but the export demand as not very encour aging. Provisions, as well as corn, showed some support. May opened a shade over Sat urday, at C5S6C5?ic, touched C&Xc and then advanced, with provisions as the guiding fac tor, to OOftc. Primary1 receipts were large, and this fact, with the reaction In corn, caused a decline, and the close was c under Saturday, at C5&C The provision market w-aj active and strong, helped by the com strength to a degree, but chiefly by the light offerings which greeted a large ffeneral demand. The opening was a shade to 2c under Saturday, in sympathy with weaker prices at the yards, buf the de pression was only for a moment. May pork closed 20c up. May lard 0c higher and May ribs 7Q 10c up. The trade In oats was net of importance, bdt the market held firmly, in sympathy with corn. The discount between oats and corn at one time was 14t&c. Matter of Grammatical Construction, NORTH YAMHILL., Or.. March 24. (To the Editor.) Will you please atate.in your valuable paper the meaning1 o the t,wo followine: sentences; if they arc or mean the same, and, if not, what is the meaning of each? First "A number of dead Boers' horses were also found." Second "A number of Boers dead horses were also found." JEREMIAH WILLIAMS. Because Jt is ambiguous, the first sen tence Is susceptible of two constructions. It may mean that dead horses belonging to Boers were found, or that live horses owned by Boers now dead wero found, "Dead" and "Boers" each may qualify "horses." To the average intelligent read er, who does not stop to analyze closely, the sentence would mean "dead horses be longing to the Boer army." Change tho proper noun, as follows, and no pne, will mistake the meaning: "A number of dead Filipino horses were found." Or .drop the possessive plural, thus: "A number of dead Boer horses were found." The meaning of the second sentence Is absolutely dear, and requires no expla nation. i e ct Joseph Lane and Delazon Smith. THE DALLES, Or., March- 25. (To the Editor.)
